Breathe

We take over 25,000 breaths a day, almost all of them unconscious. When we are under stress we tend to breathe quickly, shallowly and from the upper chest. Sometimes we even gulp air. That keeps stale air circulating in the body.

Put into practice the positive habit of pausing to breathe deeply and completely. Inhale deeply and fill your belly with air and then fill your lungs. Hold the breath for a few seconds. Exhale completely letting the air in your chest out first and in your belly out last by contracting your abdominal muscles.

Do three complete deep belly breaths before you need to go into a meeting, write a report, speak to an employee or talk to your teenager. These breaths clear the head and send life giving oxygen into the bloodstream.

Thanks. I just went to your site and find it very interesting.
I spent quite a bit of my life depressed (I am, contrary to what some new friends believe, one of those boen happy people at all)
My own constant struggle with depression was what pushed me to learn more about the science of happiness, as some call it.
The study and practice of Positive Psychology has changed my life.
Do I still have to “work” at being happy? Well, yes. Just like I have to exercise to keep my weight at a healthy level and floss to keep my gums from receding. Happiness is a choice, and a practice.

For someone like me who still slips once in a while to the old patterns of depression, practices and new learning make all the difference. And – EXERCISE makes the difference too.
